About this event

The Institute for Greece, Rome, and the Classical Tradition (IGRCT) at the University of Bristol will host its annual Donors’ Celebration on Wednesday 14th December 2022.

As part of this year’s celebrations, we have invited Professor Jackie Murray, Associate Professor of Classics at the University of Kentucky, to host a workshop for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, entitled ‘Doing something different with language.'

During the workshop, Prof. Murray will talk about her work on Patois Iliad, a creolizing translation of Homer’s poetry on which she is working in collaboration with fellow classicist Sasha-Mae Eccleston, and poets Ishion Hutchinson and Claudia Rankine. Prof. Murray will discuss with students the origin, scope, aims and challenges of her project, and explore some examples of the translation challenges she faces.

*Please note that knowledge of ancient Greek is not required for this workshop!*

After the workshop, refreshments in the form of mulled wine, mince pies and sandwiches will be provided.

Places for the workshop are limited, so if you want to attend we recommend that you book sooner rather than later!

Prof. Murray will also be delivering a lecture on ‘Race and Racecraft in Greek Epic’ later in the day, at 5-6pm. This free lecture, which is open to all, will take place in the Peel Lecture Theatre at the University of Bristol, and also online. You can register for the lecture here: https://igrctdonors2022.eventbrite.co.uk
